Smart Irrigation System for Automated Water Flow Control

Problem:

Traditional irrigation systems rely on manual control or fixed schedules, leading to water wastage, inefficient distribution, and lack of responsiveness to real-time environmental conditions.

Approach:

Designed and implemented an automated irrigation system that monitors environmental inputs and dynamically controls water flow to optimise usage and improve efficiency.

System Design:

  • Soil moisture and environmental sensors for real-time data collection
  • Control unit for processing inputs and decision-making
  • Automated valve system for regulating water flow
  • Feedback loop for continuous monitoring and adjustment

Key Contributions:

  • Developed a sensor-driven system to monitor soil moisture and environmental conditions in real time
  • Implemented automated control logic to regulate water flow based on data inputs
  • Integrated hardware components (sensors, valves, controllers) into a cohesive system
  • Designed workflows to ensure efficient and consistent water distribution
  • Tested and optimized system performance under varying environmental conditions

Constraints & Tradeoffs:

  • Sensor accuracy and reliability under changing environmental conditions
  • Balancing water conservation with adequate irrigation
  • Hardware limitations affecting precision and responsiveness
  • Need for low-cost and scalable implementation

Outcome

  • Delivered a functional system improving water efficiency and reducing manual intervention
  • Enabled smarter irrigation through data-driven decision-making
  • Demonstrated capability in building automated control systems integrating hardware and logic
