WiFi-Enabled Home Automation System with Device & Switch Control and Signal Extension

Problem:

Conventional home electrical systems lack remote control, automation, and consistent connectivity across all areas, especially in environments with weak WiFi coverage.

Approach:

Designed and implemented a smart home automation system enabling remote control of electrical devices and switches, combined with a WiFi repeater module to ensure reliable connectivity across extended spaces.

System Design:

  • Microcontroller-based control unit for device automation
  • Relay modules for switching electrical appliances
  • WiFi communication layer for remote access and control
  • Mobile/web interface for user interaction
  • Integrated WiFi repeater to extend network coverage and maintain connectivity

Key Contributions:

  • Built a WiFi-enabled system to remotely control household devices and switches
  • Integrated relay-based switching mechanisms for safe and reliable operation
  • Developed communication workflows for real-time device control over network
  • Implemented a WiFi repeater setup to improve signal strength and system reliability
  • Designed user interaction flow for simple and intuitive control
  • Tested and optimized system performance across varying network conditions

Constraints & Tradeoffs:

  • Network reliability and latency affecting real-time control
  • Electrical safety considerations for relay-based switching
  • Signal attenuation in larger or multi-room environments
  • Balancing system responsiveness with power and hardware limitations

Outcome

  • Delivered a functional smart home system enabling remote device control and improved connectivity
  • Reduced dependency on manual switching through automation
  • Demonstrated capability in building connected IoT systems with real-world usability considerations
